If you really like the poems you sent i see no reason why you can't ask your friend for a copy so you can publish them

I believe whatever you've written is yours.
The only thing I would be careful about is if it includes your friend's name or very specific situations that may be recognizable to others close to you and that friend. In both cases I would possibly change the name or anything which may be taken as slander.
If your friend loves you and enjoys your poetry then I would think they would be happy to see you successfully publish them.

Lynn I agree... yes but... poetry isn't supposed to be completely clear so, i guess if you've done that, it won't matter. i mean ambiguity is a wonderful thing. And I agree... Thanks all ... To my delight, I've discovered that I have over a hundred pages of material, I have never given away that I can choose from, so I'm a little more exicted.
