Just out of curiosity I was wondering how, if at all, the poems, etc that are posted here are protected from someone taking them and using them as their own. I imagine some people don't care, they just write for the sake of writing but others must be doing this with the hope of being published or using them as song lyrics or something. I was just wondering. The thought came to me when I was looking at the other thread asking if anybody ever had anything published.

It is Very simple to copyright something. I copyright anything I think is worth it, some stuff I put on the internet -not all- (since there is also an intellectual property lawyer where I work who informed me what to do). However, it is hard to prove that someone actually stole your words/lyrics in this day and age...
Inspiring others is a good thing. Direct copying sucks and people who do so have to live with the karma of having stolen something (and especially with poetry, they stole someone else's sentiment-that really stinks) and they are frequently found out, eventually, but not always.
C'est la vie. Sad thing is, generally, if you asked someone if you could use their words/lyrics, they would probably say yes unless they are some huge professional songwriter who thinks they are God and every word is divine...
A good example of this would be Bob Dylan using the nearly exact words from the book Confessions of a Yakusa by Junici Saga in a song called Floater:
In the book, the first page of the translation by John Bester contained the line "My old man would sit there like a feudal lord" and in the Dylan song Floater, Dylan writes: "My old man, he's like some feudal lord."
The Japanese guy was very gracious and felt Dylan using his lyrics was a high form of copliment. In Africa, copying someone (like a woman's style of dressing) is the highest form of compliment.

I don't have anything published because the volume of people purchasing it may be low. Besides, sometimes I just think how much is the wind of thought worth. Especially if I can, unknowingly influence one person in a positive way, who may be able to share that influence with more people than I can. Maybe I'm just tied of rejection in one form or another. Here people are at least simi open to the words, I and others have grabbed onto from the winds of life. I haven't posted under this name yet, but give it time. I'm just a speck of dust, in the tornado of life. Thank you all for continuing to post your words for all of us to share. Love love

You should make a chapbook. Self-printed chapbooks are a delight and you would be surprised how many people buy them. There are small distributors or you can just sell them at the local bookstore. With the wonders of the computer now, it is easy.
One of the best small bookstores in NYC sells small homemade chapbooks, for instance, including some self-printed chapbooks/poetry ezines by Thurston Moore from SOnic Youth who accumulates poems by sometimes unknown poets and others ....because people collect them.

Could you put me in the right direction? All my (little bit) of research only spoke of books.

Could you put me in the right direction? All my (little bit) of research only spoke of books. Yeah! What she-me said. I'm sorry I feel a little giggly right now, and I love this smilie! Um, but, yeah, the bigger version of books, not chapter books, and hey, how many pages are in a chapter book? Thanx
