This is my tribute to all those involved with the bushfires in Melbourne in February 2009. Victims, families, the unaccounted for, the emergency services workers, the volunteers, the red cross... Anyone involved. This is for you:
Green and brown
Turns to black and grey
Does anybody realise
What’s happened today?
The smoke still fills
Our clear blue air
But among yonder hills
Lies great despair
Lives are broken
And land is burnt
Nothing we do
Will conquer the hurt
But at least they all know
That together we grow
The fighting’s just started
But forever it goes

Wind of red and
Orange fumes
Gone the beautiful land
It consumed
We watch and we listen
We hope and we pray
What’s left to do?

Razed land sits
Were grazed land lay
But for the dead, not forgotten
Why should they pay?
A monster, some call it
A message from hell
A tough kind of curse
A terrible spell
Cast right upon us
The ruin and wreck
A day in the memory
We’ll never forget

Of which I once roamed
A slice of paradise
My second home
From Strath Creek, to Eildon
Flowerdale, beyond
As a young man I spent
Sleeping in tents
All that appears now
Is remnants and ash
What can be recalled
Of this heavenly patch
We praise all the people
Battling it out
Don’t be the victims
Keep making us proud
