don;t know why i am starting this thread because im sitting in australia without a clue of whats going on in the states so i'm guessing that the show has started by now
one question: are there bongos on the stage and if so WHY!!
the chili peppers have always been a four-piece band on stage no matter what song they are playing ...i hope this bongo thing isnt a permanent change

Not always... they used backing vocals in the past. But charlie and hump the bump are awesome live with bongos and congas.

I believe Marcel Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta is touring with them on the bongos. I think Charlie & Hump de Bump sound great tiwh the bongos.

I'm really interested to see what they played because DC is tomorrow night and it might give me an idea what they won't play. I'm just hoping for Nobody Weird or Higher Ground and no Right On Time or Me And My Friends. Those sets usually seem to be the least inspired and different.

Here is a review on the show. Looks like Me And My Friends was played, which could mean we won't get that in DC.
REVIEW Red Hot rock with mostly recent material Ageless Chili Peppers deliver same old high energy, keep clothes on COURTNEY DEVORES Special to the Observer
Twenty-plus years in rock weren't apparent during the Red Hot Chili Peppers' show Tuesday at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
The set represented the sunny California band's last decade with few nods to its first.
The much buzzed-about Gnarls Barkley warmed up the crowd. But what appeared to be an awesome 12-piece live band (dressed in school uniforms) was at the mercy of bad sound. Individual instruments were buried in bass. Cee-Lo Green, who has an incredible voice, was most audible during "St. Elsewhere." The band's hit "Crazy" and the Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone" proved best because the audience was clearly familiar with those tracks.
Thankfully the Chili Peppers didn't fight the same sound issues. Guitarist John Frusciante, bassist Flea, and drummer Chad Smith started the show with a jam that morphed into 2003's "Can't Stop" as singer Anthony Kiedis hopped onstage wearing a vest and undershirt. Next Flea, dressed in Los Angeles Lakers gear from sneakers to sweatband, dedicated "Dani California" to Charlotte Bobcat Emeka Okafor.
The band stuck to more recent material including "Otherside," "Charlie," "Get on Top," and the recent modern rock No. 1 single "Snow (Hey Oh)," all released since 1999. At one point Frusciante, who proved more than just a backing vocalist throughout the show, waved to the band as if to signal them to keep playing because "this raging guitar solo is going to take awhile." At another point they reached back to 1987 for the funk attack "Me & My Friends," with Kiedis announcing that the song was probably written before much of the crowd was born.
The show peaked with "Stadium Arcadium," and "By the Way." Both had fans singing along loudly. The band encored with "Give It Away," somewhat of an oldie, which again morphed into another of Frusciante's blistering solos. These Chili Peppers don't seem to age, but despite the band's past reputation for stripping down on stage, no one took his shirt off.

in-jam >> cant stop dani california otherside charlie fortune faded parallel universe get on top me and my friends snow ((hey oh)) right on time stadium arcadium cmon girl wet sand by the way >> chad 'sings' (His drum solo) soul to squeeze give it away >> out jam
its off the top of my head, i don't remember where john sang solo but it certainly happened. chad singing was his drum solo preceeded by a sly "You want me to sing?" cos someone in the audience had raised a sign that read "Let Chad sing" for most of the show he did sing during Wet Sand based on the same sign but not into a mic or anything of that sort.
the bongos are in place only on songs where they really fit, they're mixed really well and they are totally out of this world, they used them now on Dani California and it was really a great addition, he (Marcel rodriguez lopez) was out on four or five songs on the bongos but on other songs playing a large shaking-bell thing *(Not a tambourine ;) ) he would strike against his stand and also a gourd shaker in his other hand, someone other than him played during Warlocks probably on keys but it wasn't that audible. if josh klinghoffer is touring on keyboard with gnarls then it was him
ps their jam at the beginning seemed extended, flea is trying out a lot of really deep grooves while john plays guitar in the manner he has been lately (According to a recording from europe) fewer licks on his part but more fluid spaced-out sounds, so flea takes over playing licks and the aud. loved what he was coming up with,... chad and john sometimes communicate on stage in order to try to match eachother during chad's fills in certain parts, sort of like John walks over and suggests "We'll do this one pretty hard, ok?" and a measure or so later this incredible synchronicity (usu. quite thunderous by chad) between the two emerges.....
the end jam featured a flea solo, the on-stage screens in back had him playing with some sort of color effect behind him which was excellent ;)

Gives me alot of hope for the DC setlist though i'm bummed because I doubt they will play Wet Sand two nights in a row or Soul To Squeeze either.
You can almost start to look at the first 6 setlists and see how they are changing things around and try and guess what they will play. Hopefully we get a surprise or two. Looks like Higher Ground might be played tomorrow night and i'm guessing Havana Affair and maybe Parallel. Since Otherside was played last night Scar Tissue will probably be played in DC as well. I'm really excitied about the set and the way they have been adding some oldies every now and then or a new song never played makes the show a bit more exiciting than the previous tours. More change is needed but it's a start.

Not always... they used backing vocals in the past. But charlie and hump the bump are awesome live with bongos and congas. Very true. They had 3 backup singers on the One Hot Minute tour Also we can't forget the unofficial 5th bandmember, Tree.

John sang "For Emily". I personally thought Tuesday in Charlotte was better than the Raleigh show...although it was nice to hear Nobody Weird Like Me, Power of Equality and Havana Affair Monday. They were prompt about coming out close to 9:00 both nites...got an early start in Charlotte though. Took many pictures, was on 5th row John's side...seems the bigger the pictures the more blurry they are. If I can figure how to post I will. Also pulled a decent recording in Charlotte.

i KNOW they played warlocks...why isnt it on the setlist?? and i know i here your sorrows on the fact they never played scar tissue or under the bridge....Anyhoo, regardless of that just wanna say this concert was fucking brilliant...for every show they do, they def dont skimp...the energy was pulsating from the stage right when they came on to when they were done..i will never forget that night in my life! that's how good music sounds when you put all of your soul and passion into a band..and look at what it produces and contributes. AMaziNG! but yea warlocks was def played.
