I just got back from this show. Fucking amazing. Cedric was apparently sick so he was the only TMV member not on stage. So, instead of playing a set, TMV jammed with John Frusciante on 1 song for about 50 minutes. It was incredible.
Setlist (from The Comatorium board):
Fistful Intro Interstellar Overdrive[~13-15min] Rapid Fire Tollbooth[~8-10min] Jam [~7-10min] Juan Solo [~2-3min] Roulette Outro (extended) [~10-12min]
Then the Chili Peppers came on. Wowza. Everyone was ultra-on fire. The setlist to the best of my recollection was:
Jam Can't Stop Dani California Scar Tissue Charlie (w/ Marcel on bongos) Fortune Faded Parallel Universe Blood Sugar Sex Magik Nobody Weird Like Me For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her (best version I've heard yet) Snow Over The Hills And Far Away (snippet) Wet Sand London Calling/Right On Time Don't Forget Me Tell Me Baby Californication By The Way
Encore: Drum Solo Sunday Bloody Sunday (John & Chad only) Smells Like Teen Spirit (John & Chad only) Under The Bridge Give It Away (with a guest singer from U of T on vocals for You're Gonna Get Yours) Jam (with Anthony on vocals, singing something about a coat?)
That most likely isn't in the right order but it's the best I can remember. I mgiht be missing something as well.

Sounds like a special show indeed. Why can't we get The Mars Volta?

Indeed Steff, but I guess we are quite lucky with Mike Watt too

I was there, too! Where was everyone sitting? I was in section 109 and row 24, which was on the left side (from the audience perspective). I had a pretty good view.
I wish they played less commercial songs (in terms of singles). What was the filming for? I asked one of the merch guys if there would be a DVD of the show, and he told me he had no idea. If there was CD at least, I'd like to buy it! I didn't get any merch because it was so expensive: $45 bucks for a tee? I've never seen anything that expensive at a concert.

They get filmed at any show for video screens on the back of the stage...

Omar and John jamming was fucking unreal. I kept waiting for Cedric to come out but Omar and John just kept going. I was really pumped to see The Mars Volta, but this was definitely a fantastic substitute. Hopefully Cedric is good for tonight though. I was amazed at the amount of jamming that was done too, it was incredible. It was good to see Blood Sugar and Nobody Weird Like Me played as well, although they were expected at least one of the nights. It was Chris Warren that sang Your Gonna Get Yours though, Anthony was just joking around he said something about Proffessor of Cosmicology or something like that. One thing that pissed me off is the amount of 14 year old girls, and frat boy douchebags that had no idea what was going, leaving halfway through songs for like 10 minutes and coming back. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though.

I know exactly what you mean Wade. I was in row 5 at the front and during the Mars Volta there was barely anyone around me. A bunch of people came in after - I told them they just missed one of the most incredible things ever, and they just shrugged it off. A lot of people even said they didn't like what TMV did.
Was anyone else surprised with the tiny amount of stage banter they did? I believe they spoke all of about twice. Flea joking about "If I was David Lee Roth I'd fuck all your girlfriends. But I'm not so I'll just go back and read a book or something" was hilarious though.
I sincerely hope this gets released somehow, whether official or not. I would easily say that this performance was superior to the performances on Slane and Off The Map.

Yeah man, no one appreciated the value of John and Omar jamming at all!! I don't even think many people realized it was John up there. People we were taking the train with were like, "we'll just go get something to eat before it's only The Mars Volta." I wanted to kick them in the face.

This sounds like the best show on the Canadian tour so far, I so hope someone recorded it.
(the 2003 ones were pretty good too,f rom what I've heard, but this is...wow).
Does anyone over there at Commatorium have at least these intro jams, by any chance?

A review: Red-hot guitarist rides two trains BRAD WHEELER The Red Hot Chili Peppers At the Air Canada Centre In Toronto on Monday Aguitarist was shared, but that was it. Fans of John Frusciante are a hip batch, well aware that the Jesus look-alike with a Stratocaster would be pulling double duty, starring with both opening act Mars Volta and the headlining Red Hot Chili Peppers. (He is a central and confirmed member of the latter outfit). Going halves on Frusciante was as close as the two bands got. While the veteran California funk-rockers radiated their energy, the members of the avant-metal Mars Volta kept their mojo close. The eight-piece rockestra arrived with its motor running, taking no more than eight seconds to reach full, hard speed. The "songs" were epic instrumentals -- kind of a free-form Deep Purple, with Frusciante (often on his knees) working the Jimi Hendrix-Eddie Hazel vein. How to describe the Mars Volta effect? Perhaps you've put yourself under a railway overpass as the train roared overhead. The freedom is loud and exhilarating -- it's a rush, it feels fantastic, but you know what? That train never saw you, never heard you yell, never considered you. And there it goes, down the tracks. The Mars Volta is that single-minded locomotive. And then, the Peppers. "Give it away, give it away, give it away now," half-rapped Anthony Kiedis on the joggle-beat encore tune. Give it, take it, suck their kiss; catch what they've got and throw 'em back yours -- that's the deal with these tattooed groove hounds. How to describe the Red Hot Chili Peppers effect? Look at the group's original name (Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem) and an early album title (1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan). There you are: mayhem, flow, uplift, party. That's their mantra, baby. Borrowing the form of a blues band, the Peppers took the stage for the first of two Toronto concerts without front man Kiedis, a bounding puppy dog who arrived after a short, rousing intro-jam from the three musicians of the group. Like a boxer, Kiedis hopped around a bit, skipping to an imaginary jump rope. The hits came quick, starting with the funky Can't Stop -- "addicted to the shindig" -- where Kiedis rap-sung the verses while Frusciante countered with a hovering falsetto. The chorus was catchy and smooth (like many of the band's trademark songs), and a reggae break rounded out a mix-and-match song-crafting approach. The verses to Dani California (from this year's Stadium Arcadium) set up a swelling arena-size refrain; the 1999 hit Scar Tissue was pop-oriented with a lovely chorus. Slap-bassist Flea was a sight. Dressed in colourful skin-tight garb, he was active and lithe, easily recalling Frank Gorshin's Riddler character from TV's Batman. Drummer Chad Smith -- a dead ringer for comic actor Will Ferrell -- beat well and pleased himself with stick tossing and catching. Briefly alone onstage during the encore, Smith began pounding a recognizable rhythm when Frusciante rushed back on for a rendition of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday, followed by Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Earlier, he had offered a Bic-lit solo version of Simon & Garfunkel's For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her. There were other nuggets as well: The band often prefaced its own songs with bits of Led Zeppelin, the Clash and Black Sabbath. The concert closed as it ended, with Kiedis offstage and the other three jamming. You got the feeling Frusciante could've played all night, and, actually, that's pretty much what he did. The Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Mars Volta play Montreal tomorrow; Ottawa on Friday and Quebec City on Sunday. The source

The intro jam from this show is up on YouTube. The entire TMV set is available in FLAC (quality = very good) on The Comatorium.
Apparently the RHCP set is up on Dimeadozen. If anyone could get it over onto megaupload or something I would love you forever.

Hey thanks for this, I knew omar said something about yellowcard I just couldn't figure out what until I saw this video.' "Cedric's been listening to a lot of yellowcard and a lot of 'real bands' like that right, so we asked him to stay home, so." My friends and I were in sect. 120 row 7. There was this guy who looked like kevin drew dancing like cedric throughout the whole mars volta jam, it was awesome and I really admired his energy. It was also a little funny at times. This show was amazing, thank you for posting this video for everyone, I hope you got your camera back.
